Altruism is the principle and moral practice of concern for happiness of other human beings and/or animals, resulting in a quality of life both material and spiritual.
The word “altruism” was coined by the French philosopher Auguste Comte in French, as altruisme, for an antonym of egoism. He derived it from the Italian altrui, which in turn was derived from Latin alteri, meaning “other people” or “somebody else.”

When I was twelve or thirteen, a friend’s father, a somewhat pompous college professor, the kind who insisted on being addressed as Doctor…. told me I would never amount to anything.
As I say my gratitude prayers for today, I include him, that adult who was obviously so damaged or insecure that he felt compelled to strike out at a child. I took what he said as a challenge, a dare, a call to my Aries spirit to not only succeed, but to also surpass not only his poor expectations, but the much greater ones I already had for myself then.
