"This work is unlike any other, in its range of rich, conjuring imagery and its dexterity, its smart voice. Carroll-Hackett doesn’t spare us—but doesn’t save us—she draws a blueprint of power and class with her unflinching pivot: matter-of-fact and tender." —Jan Beatty

Friday Call for Submissions Love! Lockjaw Wants That Black Friday Writing Goodness!

Lockjaw Magazine is currently accepting submissions for its fifth issue!

“We’re a biannual online journal publishing literary ephemera, visual art, music, and video. We like your strange, your uncertain, your prophetic and visionary. We have a preference for shorter work, though we read everything we get. Text-wise, we’re primarily interested in poetry and prose and odd experiments; we do not currently publish nonfiction or essay (sorry, nonfiction and essay). As for everything else, we haven’t seen it yet, so we couldn’t possibly say.

We’re excited to announce that this issue will include guest-editing from Zachary Doss (Black Warrior Review, Banango Street). Submissions are open through November 30. Please visit our website–http://www.lockjawmagazine.com–for detailed guidelines and to check out our previous issues to see if we’re on each others’ level. Or throw caution to the wind and send your stuff to

submissions(at)lockjawmagazine(dot)com.

But yeah, read the guidelines first. Not only is it the right thing to do, it’ll help you level up as a Good Literary Citizen.

(While we are eager to hear from everyone, we’re notably eager to hear from WOC, women, writers across the LGBTQ spectrum, and any and all other marginalized voices.)

Lockjaw Loves You, And Is Looking Forward To Hearing From You Soon,

Love,

Lockjaw”

Thinking on how it wasn’t all that long ago that it was my Irish ancestors that many people wanted out of the country, saw as less than human, thought they were taking their jobs, hated for their faith and their culture.

Make art about fear and exclusion.

Daily Prompt Love <3 What We Need to Hear

11/17/2016

I called my beloved brother, my late husband’s brother, for advice early yesterday, and in the way he has that I love and respect and admire and need so much, he started by saying, “You may not like the advice I have to give. You might get mad at me.”

I laughed, and said, “I’m not gonna get mad. That’s why I called you.”

Later last night I texted him Thank you. He called and asked, “So did my cantankerous advice work out?”

I laughed again, and said, “Sure did. Thank you so much.”

He said, “Don’t thank me. It’s you. All you. Just sometimes, even when we know what’s right, what we need to do, we just need someone else to say it, to say what’s hard to hear.”

Yep.

Make art about hearing hard truths.

When the world becomes too much, I make things, usually for other people. So this week I’m sewing old fashioned cloth dolls to send to the children’s unit at the Massey Cancer Center.

Make art about when the world becomes too much.

In the way I was taught, there are four fundamental types of dreams: waking life dreams; visitation dreams; teaching dreams; and traveling dreams.

Daily Prompt <3 Yogananda on Opportunity

18 June 2016

“Opportunities in life come by creation, not by chance. You yourself, either now or in the past (including the past of former lives), have created all opportunities that arise in your path. Since you have earned them, use them to the best advantage.” ― Paramahansa Yogananda

Make art about opportunity, about creating your own opportunity.
