"This work is unlike any other, in its range of rich, conjuring imagery and its dexterity, its smart voice. Carroll-Hackett doesn’t spare us—but doesn’t save us—she draws a blueprint of power and class with her unflinching pivot: matter-of-fact and tender." —Jan Beatty

Prompts to Celebrate National Poetry Month! Join Us on Facebook and Write Something Beautiful Every Day :-) Collective Creative Power Is Magic! <3

My daily postcards to my elected reps have been mailed, my phone calls made, but my most important action today is to support and empower and encourage my community of writers and artists, however I can 🙂

Tomorrow, April 1, begins National Poetry Month, and I run a writing group on here providing art and writing prompts to anyone who passes by and is interested. For the nonwriters here, we have a tradition of celebrating Poetry Month by doing something called PAD–Poem a Day 🙂 But whether it’s poems, stories, dreams, or journal entries, celebrating spring by writing something every day is both inspiring and empowering, and I think, needed now more than ever, this beautiful raising of our collective voices, strengthening our creative spirits in a political culture that seems determined to dim them.

So please come play with us 🙂 Celebrate spring and the power of your creative spirits! You’re amazing! And we need you!

Celebrating National Poetry starting tomorrow!

18 May 2016

I spend most of my time with 18-25 year olds 🙂 I call them Angel Babies, Angel Chirren. 🙂 I call them My Teachers. Yep. They always teach me more than I could ever teach them.

Make art about something learned from a young person.

15 May 2016

I have a habit of collecting discarded photographs in thrift stores, those precious memories sold in estate sales, so many beautiful faces, so many voices, so many stories.

Had some sweet winged company.

A luna moth emerges from its cocoon with not long for this earth. The average lifespan is a week, during which time they have no means to eat (no mouths). Their week (and life) goal is simple: to reproduce. To make love, the strongest of human emotions.

Many observers believe this to be a reminder of the importance of love in our short time on this earth. Live and love to the fullest and enjoy every experience that gets thrown your way.

Make art about Loving fully in the moment.

Okay, so the garden’s cleaned up and turned over, but it’s pouring cold hard rain outside. So I guess I’m sewing, instead of planting today.

Make art about having your plans thwarted.

Daily Prompt <3 Did You Ever See the Rain?

10 May 2016

It’s another rainy day here in central Virginia, another in a line of nearly two weeks. The Japanese have more than fifty words for rain, and there are 140 more at this link in a great op-ed from the times.

My yard is a swamp.

Right now, I’m thinking saturation, saturated, drenched, waterlogged.

Make art about different kinds of rain, or words for rain, or saturation.

New Writing Workshop! Writing the Forgotten Feminine

So excited! 🙂 Along with the fabulous MeLaina Elise Ramos, I’m thrilled to be offering a brand new writing workshop! At the beach!

Writing the Forgotten Feminine:
Giving Voice to the Disregarded, Unsung, or Silenced Woman

A One-Day Writing Workshop in beautiful Grandview Beach, Hampton, VA 23664
September 19, 2015, 9am-5pm

Whether you’re drawn to the women left out of history books or that aunt in the family no one speaks of, or even your own woman-self, subverted, forgotten, or neglected in the demands of work, parenting, or relationships, the feminine voice is one of complexity, knowing, and power that spans all of human history.

And we want to hear it ring!

Join us for a gathering in which the mystery, the humor, the wisdom, and especially the strength of the feminine voice is celebrated and empowered.

Led by two women writers at different stages in their own work and lives, but who share a deep respect and interest in reclaiming the voices of forgotten or silenced women, this workshop will include readings on and by women who’ve been left out, as well as tons of prompts and exercises specifically designed to help you tap into and strengthen the feminine voice in your writing.

and….we cook for you! Lunch is included 🙂

$75 includes one-day workshop, tons of prompts and exercises, a take-away packet of reading and resource materials, and gifts created just for you.

If interested, email at vaprlover@gmail.com & carrollhackettma@gmail.com for details.
